Volunteer Opportunities

SWE-HA actively creates and participates in outreach events that support our mission to encourage young bright ladies in pursuing a career in STEM. We always welcome volunteers who can help with scholarship committee/judging, IAGTE Day, Girl Scouts Badge Day, and many other events. If you have any questions about the opportunities, please reach out to vp_outreach@houstonswe.org.

IAGTE Day

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day Registration Now Open!

The Society of Women Engineers Houston Area invites you to attend this year’s Introduce a Girl to Engineering Event (IAGTE)! IAGTE is an event providing interactive workshops established to help young girls (Grades 6 – 9) understand the opportunities available in the field of engineering.  This is a free event and will be held in person on the campus of the University of Houston – Downtown.

SWE-HA is holding its annual IAGTE event on Saturday, November 11th, 2023 from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM CST.

If you are a Parent/Guardian or Educator who would like to sign up for our Parent/Educator program, you will need to register yourself separately from your Child/Student. For any educators or groups seeking additional help, please email iagte@houstonswe.org.



Parents/Educators, be sure to sign up for the Parent/Educator Program (PEP) during registration.

Parents, guardians, teachers, counselors, administrators, and leaders are encouraged to participate in the Parent Educator Program (PEP). The program will highlight innovative education tactics to teach girls STEM and keep them engaged. You will hear from speakers about the psychology, peer pressure, and ways to help your daughter and/or student see the creative and rewarding side of STEM.

Program Elements:

  • Learn about engineering careers, scholarships, college admission, and resources
  • Network with SWE members as well as other parents and educators
  • Participate in a panel discussion with select SWE members and outreach experts

FAQ

Will this be an in-person event?

Yes! This year’s event will be held in person at the University of Houston Downtown.

Who is eligible for the program?

The event is targeted at 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th grade female students. Priority will be given to those who register in this age range. If you are outside of this range, feel free to register and based on registration counts we will work to include you in the event.

Is there a cost?

No, this is a free event!

    Is there an enrollment limit?

    Yes, first come first serve.

    Who will teach the courses? 

    Professional Engineering Women from SWE and our event sponsor Chemours, Engineering Students from the University of Houston, and Guest Speakers

    English is not my daughter’s first language. Will that be a problem?

    Not at all, we will have volunteers who are bilingual. Please indicate the first language on the registration form.

    Will the girls be provided with materials for the activities?

    Yes! Upon arriving at the event, students will be provided with all the activities needed to participate in the event.

      Are teacher recommendations needed?

      No, all you need is a desire to explore and create!

        Is a permission slip/waiver required?

          Yes, a permission slip/waiver will be emailed to the student prior to the event.

            My school is chartering a bus to bring students to the event. Will SWE reimburse transportation for schools?

            Yes – SWE will reimburse the cost of a bus to attend for schools committing to bring 40-plus students.
